A vented gas log is a ceramic log set for an existing fireplace that uses natural gas or propane, creating realistic, full-bodied flames but requiring the chimney damper to stay open, which vents smoke, soot, and heat up the flue, making them great for ambiance but less efficient for heating. They must be used in a fireplace with a functional chimney to exhaust combustion byproducts like carbon monoxide outside the home for safety.
